Egg Quality

egg quality by Worcester Acupuncture

Hi as it is Fertility Awareness week I thought I would write a blog post on egg quality

Many people with fertiity issues are concerned about egg quality. Did you know that a woman’s eggs are formed before she is even born. Unfortunately as these eggs get older then their DNA becomes fragile. This can result in chromosomal damage. This means that chromosomal damage is probably the cause of a great deal of pregnancy loss across all age groups. It has been shown that the risk of miscarriage increases as one gets older. In other words age is the number one factor affecting a woman’s fertility.

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to improve the quality of your eggs at any age, including:

  • Supplements
  • Diet
  • Lifestyle
  • Acupuncture

Supplements to improve egg quality:

CoQ10

  • Supports the energy production that powers the egg
  • Improves egg maturation and embryo quality
  • Helps chromosomes to replicate normally

Vitamin D

  • Increases ovarian response to stimulation
  • Improves implantation rates
  • Lowers risk of miscarriage

Focus on a diet that includes:

  • High protein
  • Low carb
  • No sugary or processed foods

Sleep:

The more we learn about sleep, the more we discover that eight or more hours each night is needed for optimal health. This is especially true for our eggs. For instance did you know that our bodies are designed to wake up with the sun and go to sleep when it gets dark. Therefore getting enough sleep is key for hormonal balance. Do aim for 8 hours sleep a night. This is turn wil support healthy egg development. Sleep also plays a critical role in maintaining optimal weight. This in turn promotes good energy levels and serves to reduce stress

Acupuncture:

  • Improves blood flow
  • Reduces stress
  • Improves embryo quality
  • Improve the quality of the endometrium (womb lining)
  • Regulates hormones
  • Reduces chance of miscarriage
  • Strengthens the immune system

Research has shown that acupuncture successfully increases the blood flow around the ovaries, which improves their ability to support healthy eggs. Acupuncture is also excellent for relieving stress. How long does it take to improve egg quality?

On average eggs take 3 – 4 months to mature. However even a month of supplements, acupuncture, diet and improved sleep can improve egg quality. This is especially true whn you are preparing for an IVF cycle. Of course the more time you have, then the more your eggs will benefit
