Winter is often the time of coughs and colds when your immune system takes a battering. January and February are often key months for coughs and colds. So I thought that now might be a good time to write a blog post on how to boost your immune system.
In this blog post I am going to focus on 2 ways to boost your immune system
- Acupuncture
- What you eat (Nutrition)
Ideally you can combine both to boost your immune system.
Firstly we will look at how acupuncture works to boost your immune system:
The aim of acupuncture is to balance the body . It does this by boosting your energy so that the body can strengthen itself. A healthy balanced body has a strong and effective immune system. All the things that leave us feeling run down, tired, lethargic or depressed will lower immunity and compromise how our bodies respond to pathogens. Therefore if you are feeling run down, tired, lethargic or depressed now is a good time to have some acupuncture. Not only will you feel better but your body will be in a better position to fight off the coughs and colds of those around you.

From a nutritional point of view it is a good idea to include the following in your diet:
- Oats and Barley—these contain fibre with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties which help boost immunity and speed wound healing.
- Yoghurt—contains probiotics which are live active cultures and healthy bacteria that help keep the gut and intestinal tract free of disease.
- Garlic—contains the active ingredient allicin which helps fight infection.
- Mushrooms-”studies have shown that mushrooms increase the production and activity of white blood cells, making them more aggressive. This is a good thing when you have an infection” Douglas Schar, Director of the Institute of Herbal Medicine Washington DC.
